Solar Smart Meters: Monitoring and Self-Consumption Guide

For installers: measure the correct electrical point, interpret energy flows and choose the meter approved for the inverter. Meters, loggers and managers have different jobs.

From monitoring to a compatible order

The inverter may show how much solar electricity was generated. That does not automatically tell you how much was used on site, exported or imported. Accurate management needs measurements at the right points and a clear electrical architecture.

01Why PV production alone is not enough

PV generation is energy produced by the solar array. Grid import is energy taken from the public supply; export is energy sent back. Direct self-consumption describes PV electricity used locally under the defined system configuration.

A meter at the grid connection point usually reads the net exchange with the network; it does not automatically measure total PV generation. The inverter or a separate production meter can provide this figure. Measurements must represent the same period.

With batteries or additional generators, simple balances must include charging, discharging and conversion losses. A dashboard cannot compensate for a wrongly understood metering scheme.

02Measure at the right electrical point

The position of the meter, the orientation of current transformers (CTs) and the phase assignment all affect the readings. A reversed CT can produce misleading import/export signs.

Devices may use RS485/Modbus RTU or network-based communication. Sharing an RS485 connector does not guarantee interoperability with an inverter.

Check the approved manufacturer's diagram, supported CT ratios, current range and number of phases. Work inside distribution boards belongs to qualified installers.

03Smart meter, data logger or energy manager?

A smart meter measures electrical quantities. A data logger stores or forwards system information; it is not automatically a replacement for a grid meter. An energy manager can coordinate compatible batteries and controllable loads.

Zero export requires a complete and correctly configured meter–controller–inverter solution that complies with applicable grid rules. Buying a meter alone cannot guarantee zero feed-in.

Do not confuse an inverter energy sensor with a utility revenue meter or a separately required certified production meter.

04Worked example: production and grid exchange

Illustrative example for an installation without storage or additional generation: solar production is 12 kWh; 5 kWh are exported; therefore 7 kWh were used locally, assuming aligned and complete readings. If 4 kWh were imported, building consumption totals 11 kWh.

Self-consumed fraction of solar output = 7/12 ≈ 58%. Share of total electricity demand covered directly by solar = 7/11 ≈ 64%. These metrics answer different questions.

Do not reuse these simplified equations for battery-backed systems without including storage flows and losses. None of these percentages promises a particular financial saving.

05Selecting by inverter brand and phase

First confirm the inverter's single-phase or three-phase design. Next identify its exact series, firmware, compatible meter list, supported current sensor arrangement and communication protocol.

Huawei DDSU666-H is a single-phase meter for supported Huawei installations; DTSU666-H is three-phase. SMA, Chint/SolaX and ZCS devices have their own compatibility lists. Similar model numbers do not imply universal compatibility.

Where smart load management is required, confirm whether an approved controller such as Huawei EMMA-A02 is appropriate. Not every installation needs the same architecture.

06Compatible MR WATT products to compare

The following MR WATT products are different alternatives, not parts of a universal kit. Choose from the inverter's approved equipment list and current technical sheet.

Verify whether CTs are included, direct measurement is supported, and which communication hardware is required before ordering.

07A professional buying path

Installer workflow: record inverter and firmware → identify metering point → choose approved meter → verify CTs and phases → assess data logging or energy management → quote all required components.

Hybrid inverter backup and battery monitoring can be related needs, but neither automatically follows from buying an energy meter. Use the connected Learning Zone guides to assess each requirement separately.

08Frequently asked questions

Can a Huawei meter work with any inverter?

No. Check the exact model, firmware, compatible meter list and wiring scheme.

Does a grid meter measure all solar production?

Not necessarily. A grid-point meter normally measures import/export; generation may come from the PV inverter.

Is it the same as the utility company's meter?

No. Utility and revenue metering have different roles and approval requirements.

Does the smart meter provide zero export alone?

No. The inverter and controller must also support the function and be configured correctly.

Can a reversed CT cause wrong readings?

Yes. Direction and phase assignment must be checked by the installer.
