Solar PV Combiner Boxes: DC/AC Protection Guide
For professional installers: understand DC and AC cabinets, string counts, isolators and SPDs before selecting a protection assembly.

A PV combiner cannot be selected simply by counting panels. String design, inverter inputs, voltage at low temperatures, electrical protection and assembly requirements all influence the correct choice.

01DC combiner, AC panel and grid interface are different
A DC combiner box manages PV strings and may include gPV fuses, DC isolation, surge protection and terminals depending on its design.
An AC protection panel is located on the inverter's alternating-current side. A combined AC/DC panel houses different circuits in an assembly designed for their separation and ratings.
Grid interface protection addresses the grid connection requirements where applicable; it does not replace all string protection. Italian grid connections may be subject to CEI 0-21, whereas other countries apply their own local rules.

02Fuse, isolator and surge protection: distinct functions
An appropriately rated DC isolator separates PV circuits under its specified conditions. A switch rated only for AC is not automatically suitable for DC interruption.
gPV fuses address reverse current or overcurrent where required by the design; not every single string needs exactly the same fuse arrangement.
A photovoltaic DC SPD and an AC SPD are different devices. The required type, position and coordination depend on transient overvoltage risk, lightning protection and local rules. An SPD does not replace protective earthing.
A 1,000 V DC label alone does not make any assembly compliant: verify currents, switching category, heating and complete system design.
03One, two or four strings?
One, two and four string labels describe specified inputs or circuits. They do not establish whether multiple inputs may safely be connected in parallel or must remain separate.
Inverters with independent MPPT inputs may require separated string circuits. Check the single-line diagram and tracker current limits before choosing a combiner.
A professional specification includes cold-weather maximum Voc, Isc, number of strings, MPPT allocation, operating environment, cable arrangement and protection requirements.

04600 V or 1,000 V DC ratings
A 600 V or 1,000 V DC rating must be checked against maximum cold-weather open-circuit voltage, not only string operating voltage Vmp.
Current ratings, enclosure IP protection, temperature, documentation and assembly verification are equally important.
Two arrays with the same kWp can require very different DC protection because their string voltages and currents differ.
05How to compare AC/DC and three-phase panels
A single-phase AC/DC panel may combine protected DC and AC sections. It is not interchangeable with a DC-only combiner or a three-phase AC panel.
The correct RCD, SPD and disconnection scheme must follow the inverter instructions and the applicable electrical rules.
Some inverters integrate DC safety functions. That does not make external cabinets always optional or always mandatory; determine the need through the project design.

08Frequently asked questions
Is a DC combiner always mandatory?
Not universally. The answer depends on inverter-integrated functions, system design and applicable requirements.
Does a two-string box suit every inverter with two MPPTs?
No. Confirm whether strings remain separate and check voltage, current and manufacturer requirements.
Is the same AC RCD suitable for every inverter?
No. Protection type and characteristics depend on inverter design and installation rules.
Are DC and AC SPDs interchangeable?
No. Choose a device specifically rated for the intended DC or AC application.
Does a 1,000 V label guarantee compatibility?
No. Maximum system voltage, current, switching and assembly data must be verified.
