The SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 25 (STPH25-70) is the 25 kW three-phase hybrid inverter in SMA's Hybrid X platform for commercial use. It is the size for sites that consume mostly during the day but still have significant loads in the evening: workshops, small businesses, farms with cold rooms, pumps or milking parlours, and hospitality buildings.

Who needs a 25 kW hybrid

A business working from 8 am to 6 pm uses much of its PV production in real time; the value of the battery lies in the edges of the day, when machines start early in the morning and when loads stay on after sunset. With 37.5 kWp connectable on 4 MPPTs at 32 A with two strings each, the 25 kW handles multi-pitch warehouse roofs, carports and canopies in a single inverter, without external combiner boxes.

Rated power is reached from 335 V MPP voltage, so strings need to be slightly longer than on the 20 kW. On the AC side the maximum current is 37.9 A per phase, with screw terminals for 10 to 25 mm² cables: size the feeder and its protection accordingly.

Eight modules for 25 kW, and why Home Storage falls short

SMA's approved battery table shows how much the storage configuration affects real power. With SMA Storage M, a 25 kW discharge needs at least 8 modules (32.8 kWh): 7 modules stop at 22.3 kW and 6 at 19.1 kW. SMA Home Storage, even in its largest 19.6 kWh configuration, reaches 23.3 kW, so on this model it cannot use the inverter's full power. Charging rises to 30 kW with 10 or more Storage M modules, up to a maximum of 12 modules (49.1 kWh).

In practice, a business should size storage from its real evening loads rather than from the inverter rating: if 10-15 kW stay on after sunset, 5-6 modules are enough in terms of power, and the choice then depends on how much energy needs to be covered.

The datasheet is still marked preliminary. At 25 kW many grid operators also require an external interface protection with test reports: check your local connection rules and the availability of the national grid code certificate before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many Storage M modules do I need for a 25 kW discharge?

At least eight, i.e. 32.8 kWh. With seven modules discharge stops at 22.3 kW. The maximum is 12 modules (49.1 kWh).

Is SMA Home Storage suitable for this model?

It is approved from 6.5 to 19.6 kWh, but even in its largest configuration it delivers 23.3 kW. To use the full 25 kW you need Storage M.

How do I size the strings?

Up to eight strings, two on each of the 4 MPPTs, with 32 A usable per input. The MPP voltage must stay between 335 and 850 V for full power, and the open-circuit voltage at the site's minimum temperature below 1,000 V.

What cable and protection does the AC side need?

The maximum output current is 37.9 A per phase and the terminals accept 10 to 25 mm². Cable cross-section and the protective device are chosen by the installer based on length, laying method and local rules.

Does it support backup during a blackout?

It has a 3,680 W single-phase SPS outlet with manual switching, and automatic off-grid operation up to 25 kVA is declared. Peak currents and switchover time are still "tbd" in the preliminary datasheet: base backup design on confirmed data only.
