The SolarEdge SE8K-RWB48BFN4 is an 8 kW three-phase hybrid inverter from the SolarEdge Home Hub range: a single device that manages photovoltaic production, battery charging and discharging and, with additional hardware, off-grid operation during a grid outage. It is the mid-size model in the three-phase family, between the SE5K and the SE10K.

DC coupling: where the real gains are made

The architecture is DC-coupled: excess photovoltaic energy goes directly into the battery without first being converted to AC and then back to DC. Over a full cycle, this recovers a few percentage points that are lost twice in AC-coupled systems. Combined with the DC oversizing of up to 200% typical of SolarEdge, this is the main reason why this architecture is chosen for residential systems with storage.

Backup is not included: read before quoting

This is the point that most often leads to misunderstandings with the end customer. The SE8K-RWB48BFN4 is backup-ready, not equipped for backup: to power loads during a blackout, the SolarEdge Home three-phase backup interface (BI-NEUNU-3P-01), to be purchased separately, is required, as well as the battery of course. Anyone promising backup while showing only the inverter code is overlooking a cost item that is far from marginal.

There is a second limit that must be stated clearly: the maximum battery charge and discharge power is 5.000 W, compared with the inverter’s 8 kW. Therefore, when the grid is unavailable, the energy available from the battery is limited to 5 kW even if the inverter is larger and even if multiple battery modules are installed. The critical loads panel must be sized based on that figure, not on the rated 8 kW.

Battery, fans and installation location

The inverter works with the SolarEdge Home 48V battery (BAT-05K48), from 1 to 5 modules per inverter, stackable in towers of up to 4 modules each. Unlike single-phase HD-Wave inverters, the SE8K is fan-cooled and declares a noise level of less than 50 dBA: it is not a device to be installed next to a bedroom. At 37 kg and 907 x 317 x 192 mm, it also requires two people for wall mounting. The temperature range is wide, from -40 to +60 °C, and the IP65 rating allows outdoor installation.

For the electrical panel, SolarEdge recommends an external type A 100 mA residual current device, with a residual non-tripping current of at least 70 mA, unless otherwise required by local regulations.

If I buy this inverter, do I have backup in case of a blackout?

Not with the inverter alone. The SE8K-RWB48BFN4 is backup-ready, but to power loads when the grid is unavailable, the SolarEdge Home BI-NEUNU-3P-01 three-phase backup interface and the battery are required; the interface is purchased separately. Compliance with local regulations must also be checked, because off-grid operation is subject to specific requirements.

If the inverter is 8 kW, do I have 8 kW available in backup?

No, and this is the most important constraint to know during the design phase. The maximum battery charge and discharge power is 5.000 W: that is the limit of the energy that can be drawn from the storage system, regardless of the inverter size and the number of battery modules installed. The critical loads panel must therefore be sized based on 5 kW.

How many batteries can I connect?

Up to five SolarEdge Home 48V BAT-05K48 battery modules per inverter. The modules are stacked in towers of a maximum of four units each, so a five-module configuration must be arranged across two towers. Adding modules increases the stored capacity but not the charge and discharge power, which remains 5.000 W.

Does it make noise? Where is it best installed?

Unlike single-phase HD-Wave inverters, which are cooled by natural convection and are extremely quiet, the SE8K uses fans and declares a noise level of less than 50 dBA. It is perfectly acceptable in a garage, technical room or outdoors, but it is best to avoid walls adjoining bedrooms or living rooms. With a weight of 37 kg, installation requires two people.

With 8 kW three-phase, is an external interface panel required?

No. The threshold set by CEI 0-21 for the simplified procedure is 11,08 kW: with 8 kW, the interface protection integrated into the inverter is sufficient and there is no need for an external panel with SPI relay, interface device and test report. If you plan to expand the system beyond that threshold in the future, it is worth taking this into account already during the design phase.
