Hybrid Inverter SMA Tripower Hybrid X 15 kW 3-Phase
SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 15 (STPH15-60): 15 kW three-phase hybrid inverter, up to 22.5 kWp on 3 MPPTs, high-voltage battery 80-600 V at 50 A with charging and discharging up to 15 kW.
The largest model of the compact platform: 33.5 kg, natural convection, 36 dB(A). Automatic three-phase backup up to 15 kVA with the SMA Backup box, and also compatible with BYD Battery-Box storage.
The SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 15 (STPH15-60) is the 15 kW three-phase hybrid inverter that tops the compact platform of SMA's new hybrid family. Above this size the range moves to the 20, 25 and 30 kW models, which are different machines: heavier, fan-cooled and with a shorter list of approved batteries. The 15 kW is therefore where you get the most power while keeping a quiet, fanless inverter that two people can carry.
The most powerful model of the compact platform
It shares the enclosure of the 5 to 12 kW models: 467 x 555 x 239 mm, 33.5 kg, natural convection cooling and a typical noise level of 36 dB(A). It can go in a garage, a utility room next to living areas or under a carport, with no fan noise and no fans to maintain. Night-time self-consumption stays below 18 W.
Compared with the 12 kW, the numbers that matter change: 22.5 kWp of connectable PV instead of 18, rated power reached from 300 V MPP voltage, and a European efficiency of 97.8%, the best in the series.
The datasheet lists CE, IEC 62109-1/-2, EN 50549-1 and VDE-AR-N 4105, with several further national grid codes marked "in progress". Before ordering, check that the certificate required by your grid operator is available, and whether an external interface protection is required at this power level under your local connection rules.

The battery decides whether you really get 15 kW
The inverter charges and discharges at 15 kW, but the actual power depends on the battery connected. According to SMA's approved battery table, SMA Storage M needs at least 5 modules (20.5 kWh) to reach 15 kW, while 3 modules stop at 9.5 kW and 4 at 12.7 kW; the maximum allowed on this model is 36.9 kWh. With SMA Home Storage, 15 kW is available from 13.1 kWh. With BYD you need at least HVM+ 16.6, HVS+ 12.8 or HVB 17.8 kWh.
The 15 kW is also the last model in the family that accepts BYD Battery-Box storage: in the same table, the 20 to 30 kW models are approved with SMA batteries only. If you already own a BYD, or prefer it for price and availability, this is as far as you can go.
Automatic backup with the SMA Backup box delivers the full 15 kVA off-grid, with peaks of 43.5 A for 2 seconds to start pumps and compressors. It is not a UPS: typical switchover is 1-2 seconds, so computers and sensitive equipment need their own protection. The built-in 3,680 W SPS outlet, switched manually, remains the low-cost alternative when no backup box is installed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose the 15 kW or the 20 kW?
If the array stays within 22.5 kWp and you need no more than three orientations, the 15 kW is lighter, quieter and also accepts BYD batteries. The 20 kW is for larger arrays, up to 30 kWp, or for more than three roof faces, thanks to its 4 MPPTs.
How many Storage M modules do I need for 15 kW?
At least five, i.e. 20.5 kWh. With four modules power stops at 12.7 kW and with three at 9.5 kW. The maximum on this model is 36.9 kWh.
Do large-format TOPCon modules work on these inputs?
Each input accepts 18 A usable and 24 A short-circuit current, enough for large-format TOPCon and bifacial modules. The constraint is one string per MPPT: three strings in total, with the open-circuit voltage at the site's minimum temperature below 1,000 V.
Does the house stay powered during a blackout?
With the SMA Backup box, yes: three-phase, up to 15 kVA, with a typical switchover of 1-2 seconds. Without the box only the 3,680 W single-phase SPS outlet is available, activated manually.
Can it work alongside another inverter?
Yes. The integrated System Manager controls up to 10 devices including up to 5 inverters, so a second hybrid or string inverter can be added later to expand the system without replacing the first one.
