The SMA HS-BU-10 is the original base for floor installation of SMA Home Storage battery modules. It is used when wall mounting is not possible or not desired: it raises the battery tower off the floor, distributes its weight and secures it with the included anti-tip brackets.
When the base is needed and when it is not
The HS-BM-3.28-10 modules of 3.28 kWh weigh 38 kg each. SMA provides three installation modes: on the wall (the anchors are already in the battery box), on the floor with this base, or back-to-back. The base becomes mandatory when the wall cannot bear the load — plasterboard, light partitions, infill walls — or when you prefer not to load the masonry with over 100 kg of stacked batteries. On a 5-module system, split across two towers, two bases are required: each holds a maximum of 3 stacked modules.

How to size the system
- 1 module (3.28 kWh) up to 3 modules (9.8 kWh): one tower, one base
- 4 modules (13.1 kWh): two towers of 2+2, two bases
- 5 modules (16.4 kWh), the maximum configuration: two towers of 3+2, two bases
Each tower also needs a HS-TC-10 top cover if you want to aesthetically close the highest module and route the cables neatly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the base mandatory or can I place the battery on the floor?
SMA Home Storage modules must not be placed directly on the floor: the base ensures separation from the ground, correct weight distribution and the anti-tip restraint. Alternatively, wall mounting is used, for which the anchors are already supplied with the battery.
How many bases are needed for a 16.4 kWh system?
Two. The maximum 5-module configuration is built on two towers, one of 3 and one of 2 modules, and each tower rests on its own base. The 3-module-per-base limit is structural and must not be exceeded.
Are the fastening brackets included?
Yes, the package includes two brackets that secure the tower to the wall behind it as anti-tip protection. It is a safety requirement, not an optional accessory: they must be fitted even when the battery seems stable on its own.
Can I use it for an outdoor installation?
Yes. SMA Home Storage modules have an IP65 protection rating and are also suitable for outdoor use; the base shares the same intended use. The advice still applies to choose a position sheltered from direct sun and driving rain, so the cells do not operate at the extremes of the temperature range.
Is it also needed for wall mounting?
No. If the wall is suitable to bear the weight of the modules, the anchor kit already included in the battery box is used and the base is not needed. The HS-BU-10 is designed exactly for cases where the wall cannot be used.
