The SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 8 (STPH8-60) is the 8 kW three-phase hybrid inverter of SMA's new platform: it handles up to 12 kWp of PV on three independent inputs, a high-voltage battery and, through the built-in System Manager, the home's flexible loads. It is the size for owners of a heat pump or an electric car who want to decide when to consume, not just how much to produce.

18 A per input: the module check to make

Each MPPT accepts 18 A usable current and 24 A short-circuit current, with one string per input. 182 mm format modules, TOPCon included, typically run around 13-14 A and fit comfortably. Large-format modules with 210 mm cells, however, approach 18 A at maximum power: compare the datasheet values with the input limit, because excess current does not damage the inverter but is clipped, and the yield lost in the best hours cannot be recovered.

The 24 A short-circuit limit is the safety limit: it must be respected with the module's Isc, with margin for high irradiance and, on bifacial modules, for rear-side gain.

Energy Planner and Energy Maximizer: deciding when to consume

Energy management is built into the inverter. SMA Energy Planner, always available, lets you plan manually when to charge the battery or run loads. SMA Energy Maximizer, a paid option, does the same automatically: it learns consumption profiles, uses production forecasts and takes dynamic tariffs into account, shifting charging and consumption towards the cheapest hours. Commissioning is done with the SMA 360° app.

What it means in everyday life

With 10-11 kWp, a 16.4 kWh Storage M battery and a heat pump, domestic hot water heats up at midday on solar, the car charges in the early afternoon and the battery covers the evening. A 3-module battery would be enough in energy but not always in power: towards the end of discharge its voltage drops and available power falls below 8 kW. With 4 modules this does not happen.

Frequently asked questions

Are 210 mm modules suitable?

It depends on the current at maximum power: if it exceeds the input's 18 A usable, the inverter limits the current and part of the peak-hour yield is lost. Also check Isc against the 24 A allowed. With 182 mm modules this is not an issue.

What does ShadeFix do?

It is SMA's maximum power point tracking algorithm that periodically scans the string curve to find the true maximum when partial shading creates several peaks. It pays off on roofs with chimneys, dormers or trees, where a simple tracker would stay on a local maximum.

Can I use it with dynamic tariffs?

Yes, with SMA Energy Maximizer, a paid service that uses forecasts and hourly prices to decide when to charge and discharge the battery. Without a subscription, manual planning with SMA Energy Planner remains available.

How many Storage M modules are needed for 8 kW?

Three modules (172.8 V nominal) give about 8.6 kW at 50 A, but as the battery nears empty the voltage drops and power stays below 8 kW. Four modules, 16.4 kWh, keep full discharge power all evening.

Which grid certificates are available?

The June 2026 datasheet confirms EN 50549-1, VDE-AR-N 4105:2018 and NA/EEA-NE7; other national codes are marked "in progress". Check availability for your country and firmware version before applying for grid connection.
