The SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 6 (STPH6-60) is a 6 kW three-phase hybrid inverter that combines a PV inverter, high-voltage battery management and control of household loads. It is the typical size for three-phase homes that want to store daytime production and, above all, not be left in the dark when the grid fails.

SPS and automatic backup: two different levels of continuity

As standard the inverter has an SPS (Secure Power Supply) output: a single-phase socket rated 3,680 W and 16 A that is activated manually during a blackout. It keeps the fridge, router and chargers alive, but someone has to be at home and the loads have to be plugged into that socket.

The second level comes with the SMA Backup BU-STPH box: switching becomes automatic and the whole house is supplied in three-phase, with no backup-loads board, and short peaks allowed up to 150% of rated power for under 100 ms and 125% for under 30 s. Automatic backup requires a battery connected to the inverter acting as System Manager and an SMA Energy Meter. It is not a UPS: the transfer takes from one to a few seconds.

How much PV fits

The limit is 9 kWp, 150% of rated power, spread over three inputs with one string each. With 450 W modules that means up to 20 modules, for example 7 + 7 + 6 on three roof faces. Rated power is reached from just 120 V MPP voltage, so even the shortest strings run at full output. DC oversizing raises yield in the morning, in the evening and on hazy days, when the inverter runs well below maximum power.

What it means in everyday life

During an evening blackout with automatic backup installed, a home with a 12.3 kWh Storage M battery keeps the fridge, freezer, lighting, boiler, router and TV running without noticing, with room for the washing machine. Without the backup box, the 3,680 W SPS socket is still enough for the fridge, the lights in one room and phone charging, provided someone switches it on.

Frequently asked questions

How much power do I have during a blackout?

With the SPS socket alone, 3,680 W on one phase. With the SMA Backup box the whole house stays supplied in three-phase, within the power limits of inverter and battery, with short overloads allowed for motor and compressor inrush.

Do I need a backup-loads board?

Not with the SMA Backup box, which is installed upstream of the distribution board and switches the entire installation up to 63 A per phase. With the SPS socket only, the loads to keep running must be physically plugged into that socket.

Can it control the heat pump or wallbox?

Yes. The built-in System Manager handles up to 10 devices, and the inverter has 2 multifunction relays and 6 digital inputs, so flexible loads can be shifted into production hours. With the paid SMA Energy Maximizer, optimisation also takes dynamic tariffs into account.

Is it noisy? Can it go indoors?

Typical noise is 36 dB(A) with convection cooling: it can be installed in a plant room or garage, or outdoors thanks to IP65, sheltered from direct sun and driving rain.

Which grid certificates are available?

The June 2026 datasheet confirms EN 50549-1, VDE-AR-N 4105:2018 and NA/EEA-NE7; other national codes, including Austria's TOR, Belgium's C10/C11, Italy's CEI 0-21 and Spain's NTS, are marked "in progress". Check availability for your country before ordering.
