Hybrid Inverter SMA Tripower Hybrid X 30 kW 3-Phase
SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 30 (STPH30-70): the largest model in the family, 29.99 kW output, up to 45 kWp on 4 MPPTs at 32 A and a high-voltage battery 120-800 V charging and discharging at up to 30 kW.
A full 30 kW discharge needs at least 10 SMA Storage M modules (40.9 kWh). Preliminary datasheet 05/2026.
The SMA Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 30 (STPH30-70) is the largest model in the SMA Hybrid X family: 29,990 W rated power, up to 45 kWp of PV and a battery that can charge and discharge at 30 kW. It is the inverter for warehouses, larger farms, hotels and offices with consumption spread across the day, when one device is preferred over two smaller inverters.
45 kWp and 30 kW of battery power in one device
The PV array can reach 150% of the AC rating: 45 kWp on 4 MPPTs at 32 A, with up to eight strings. Rated power is reached from 370 V MPP voltage, the highest value in the family, so strings must be long, because in summer the voltage of hot modules drops by more than 10%. As a rough guide, 450 W modules need at least 13 in series, while the open-circuit voltage at the site's minimum temperature must stay below 1,000 V. On the AC side the maximum current is 45.5 A per phase and the terminals take up to 25 mm²: on long runs, check the cross-section against voltage drop.
Oversizing keeps the inverter close to its rated power for more hours a day. With a large enough battery, the energy that would exceed 30 kW AC at midday can go into charging instead of being clipped.

Ten modules for 30 kW
From SMA's approved battery table: with SMA Storage M, a 30 kW discharge is only available from 10 modules (40.9 kWh) upwards, and charging also reaches 30 kW from 10 modules. With 8 modules (32.8 kWh) power stops at 25.5 kW. SMA Home Storage, at most 19.6 kWh, stops at 23.3 kW: on this model it is a compromise. The upper limit is 12 Storage M modules, i.e. 49.1 kWh.
The integrated System Manager can coordinate up to 5 inverters, so larger sites can grow in 30 kW steps. Before planning a multi-inverter system, check the point at which your network operator requires a medium-voltage connection or a central interface protection, and confirm that the grid code certificate for your country is available: the datasheet is still marked preliminary.
Frequently asked questions
How many Storage M modules do I need for a 30 kW discharge?
At least ten, i.e. 40.9 kWh; from 10 modules upwards charging also reaches 30 kW. With 8 modules power stops at 25.5 kW. The maximum is 12 modules (49.1 kWh).
Why 29,990 W and not 30,000?
That is the rated active and apparent power SMA declares for grid operation; in off-grid mode the datasheet states 30,000 W. In practice it is a 30 kW inverter, with a maximum output current of 45.5 A per phase.
How long should the strings be?
Rated power needs at least 370 V MPP voltage even with hot modules, so strings must be long: with 450 W modules, at least 13 in series as a rough guide. The open-circuit voltage at the site's minimum temperature must stay below 1,000 V.
One 30 kW or two 15 kW inverters?
A single 30 kW lowers installation costs and offers 4 MPPTs at 32 A, suited to large-format modules. Two 15 kW units give redundancy, natural cooling and the option of BYD batteries, but mean two devices and two batteries to manage.
Is the datasheet final?
Not yet. The current version (05/2026) is marked preliminary, with noise, night consumption and backup values still to be defined. Ask for the latest document before ordering.
