DIY solar panels and legality: practical guide
Building a small panel is not the same as connecting generation to a home. This guide separates maker work, regulated work and responsibility.
Is DIY solar legal?
It depends on what you build, where it is installed and what it connects to. Soldering cells for an experiment is different from modifying household wiring. A kit is not an exemption from electrical or building rules.

What makes sense to do yourself
- Build a small low-voltage experimental module.
- Measure Voc and Isc using suitable equipment.
- Document polarity, fuses, ratings and wiring.
- Use a non-structural support and isolated DC load.
- Hand fixed wiring and grid connection to someone authorised to certify it.
English readers: rules are national
There is no single European DIY permission. Network notification, installer certification, planning, plug-in limits and product rules differ between the UK and EU member states. Even zero-export systems can require declaration.
A safe seven-step route
- Define educational, isolated, balcony or grid use.
- Draw voltages, currents, power and protection points.
- Check datasheets, compatibility and certificates.
- Assess water, wind, temperature and mechanical loads.
- Identify network, planning, property and insurance duties.
- Use qualified people for reserved work.
- Test, label, retain documents and inspect periodically.
