The PLA , or polylactic acid, is a polymer derived from plants such as corn (to produce 1kg of PLA will be used about 2.5kg ) , wheat or beet , rich in natural sugar (dextrose ) .
The dextrose is converted to lactic acid through a fermentation process , and subsequently in versatile polymers that can be used to produce similar resins to plastic or fibers .
